Mandeville and Top Cow Shoot for Feature Adaptation of Crosshair

Mandeville Films partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman announced today that Mandeville and Top Cow Productions will join forces to produce a feature film version of Top Cows comic book Crosshair. Mandeville learned of the project of the eve of San Diegos Comic-Con, and, after extensive negotiations, closed the deal over the weekend to adapt the comic to the big screen.

Created by Marc Silvestri, written by Jeff Katz, and illustrated by Silverstri and Allan Jefferson, Crosshair follows a former CIA assassin turned suburban superdad who faces his most dangerous enemy ever - himself. Justin Weller learns that he has 48 hours until a suppressed program in his brain will turn him into an unstoppable killing machine aimed at the President of the United States. Weller races against the clock to uncover and reverse the source of his trigger.

When Top Cow showed us this story, we jumped at the chance to work on this project with them, said Hoberman. Our companies are similarly aligned with the goal of delivering one-of-a-kind stories.

Crosshair is a unique premise in which the main character is both the hero and the villain, said Lieberman. This dichotomy is very unsettling, which makes it a fantastic twist for audiences.

"After working with the Mandeville guys on Alibi, we knew Crosshair could not be in better hands, said Top Cow President Matt Hawkins. When they said they wanted to turn the property into film, Marc Silvestri and I were incredibly excited."

Mandevilles partners Hoberman and Lieberman will produce. Crosshair writer Katz will co-produce for Top Cow. Executive producers are David Manpearl of Mandeville, Crosshair Creator Silvestri and Top Cows Hawkins.

Top Cow lit up the comic book industry when Universals adaptation of Top Cows Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie, scored $207 million in worldwide box office in 2008.

This is the second collaboration between Mandeville and Top Cow. At last years Comic-Con, the two joined forces to develop a feature version of Top Cows title, Alibi.

Horror horror everywhere at Comic Con

Photo by E. Lacey, Metal Life Magazine

Horror took over the advertising inside the main halls of the San Diego convention center during Comic Con 2010. Resident Evil: Afterlife, The Walking Dead and True Blood banners were everywhere. It was nice to see and a welcome change from some of the usual lesser interesting advertising (we won't mention any names).

When the art and technology existed, they mastered it when it didnt, they invented it. From concept to creation, Stan Winston laid the foundation for the techniques that drive an entire industry."

SKYLINE promoted at Comic Con with ad and bubbles

Universal's upcoming sci-fi thriller Skyline had a hotel sized ad on the Marriot in San Diego during San Diego Comic Con 2010. The movie is about a group of friends who are awoken in the night by a bright light and when they go outside to investigate, they see everyone else is drawn outside as well. Then everyone rises up into the air and vanishes. A small group of survivors must now struggle against the foes that taking the Earth's population.

In a stroke of advertising genius, there was a bubble machine that made human shaped bubble blobs that were sent up into the air over the San Diego Convention center. These bubble people also vanished into the sky, although not due to an alien force like in the movie. It was awesome to see the reactions of all the Comic Con attendees that saw the bubble people floating away.

US release date is set for November 12, 2010

The Hobbit movie news from Comic Con

We spoke with many people about the Hobbit in an attempt to gather any information available. Comic Con attendees were told by Guillermo del Toro "As a fan, I hope those movies get made. And I hope to God Peter Jackson directs them. Theyre beautiful and theyre needed in the world."

Now while this sounds like the movie(s) are not even an active project, Metal Life Magazine did learn that legendary artist John Howe was holed up in New Zealand actively working on The Hobbit art. John is officially listed as a member of the art team and the fact that he is working on the art tells us The Hobbit is under way.

Cast and crew have not been announced although there are many rumors. We will have to wait and see how the financial status of MGM affects this project however. Perhaps Warner Bros can step in.

Guillermo del Toro to make HAUNTED MANSION movie

SAN DIEGO, Calif. July 22, 2010 Guillermo del Toro surprised the 6,500 fans gathered today at Comic-Con with the announcement that he is currently developing a new film for The Walt Disney Studios based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, The Haunted Mansion.

Dark imagery is an integral part of the Walt Disney legacy. After all, Disney himself was the father of some really chilling moments and characters - think Chernabog from Fantasia or Maleficent as the Dragon or the Evil Queen in Snow White, said del Toro. I couldn't be more excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains- for me- the most desirable piece of real estate in the whole world!"

Millions of people from around the world visit The Haunted Mansion each year, but no one has ever had a tour guide like Guillermo del Toro, said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. Guillermo is one of the most gifted and innovative filmmakers working today and he is going to take audiences on a visually-thrilling journey like theyve never experienced before.

Since August 1969, foolish mortals have dared to trespass on the macabre grounds of Disneys Haunted Mansion. A hallowed landmark in Disneylands New Orleans square, its the dwelling place of 999 happy haunts dying to meet new visitors each day. The plantation-style of the mansions facade is a sweet deception for visitors. Inside, ghostly doom buggies line the hallways. Since its construction, the mysteries of the mansion have transcended the attraction with stories surfacing about horrifying encounters with the supernatural. Versions of the daunting edifice have been built at other Disney theme parks in Orlando, Tokyo and Paris.

Editor's Note: Perhaps, this time, we will get a proper Haunted Mansion since it sounds like Mr del Toro will not be making this into a silly comedy.

DARE COMICS to unveil "The Hunter" movie designs at San Diego Comic Con

San Diego, California, 15 July, 2010 - Dare Comics, a young upstart in a world of publishing giants, is unveiling concept designs for The Hunter feature film at San Diego Comic-Con next week, to give fans a sense of how the comic will translate to film.

Australian director Shane Abbess, noted for directing feature film Gabriel, has been instrumental in shaping the strong aesthetic.

Dare Comics writer and founder, Adam Hamdy, says working with Shane has been a fantastic experience. "Right from the start, he wanted to take The Hunter beyond a standard superhero movie. In addition to action sequences that will blow people's minds, we've been working hard on building strong, believable characterization, and compelling story lines. There's a depth to the film that is mirrored in its unique visual style, which can only be described as high-technology meets dark romance," Hamdy says. "We're excited to share the designs with fans. We're working hard to ensure that The Hunter feature film is an original, entertaining experience."

It's been a wild ride for Dare Comics. Founded in 2007, Dare's debut publication, The Hunter, launched in December 2007, quickly earning widespread critical acclaim, and achieving great commercial success, with a growing readership that has already topped 130,000 worldwide. An animated comic series of The Hunter is already in production, with development continuing on a feature film and video game.

The Hunter is proving to be more of a success than Hamdy ever imagined. "I had the crazy idea to create a superhero for the 21st Century and wrote his debut as a 272 page series. It was a mammoth undertaking without the resources of a big publisher behind us. Thankfully, like all the best independent, guerilla initiatives, The Hunter has captured imaginations around the world. Younger fans love that Hunter is a cool, stylish superhero, while older fans identify with the outsiders in the story - most notably Freak."

Dare Comics will be showcasing the new designs at Booth 5535 at San Diego Comic-Con between 21st - 25th July.

Severin Films to release "LOOSE SCREWS", sequel to Screwballs

Classic Sex-Romp Sequel Restored to Pristine Condition from Original Negative for DVD and Blu-Ray Debut

Features Directors Cut and Uncensored International Version

LOS ANGELES (July 9, 2010) Severin Films' release of Screwballs was one of the DVD events of 2009; a proud restoration of a lost classic to its rightful place just beneath Porky's in the pantheon of 80s teen sex comedies. But just when viewer's temperatures had finally dropped back within a medically acceptable range, Severin Films has plunged into the Corman vaults once more for Screwballs' ante-upping, button-busting follow-up. LOOSE SCREWS will available on DVD and Blu-Ray at discriminating retailers nationwide July 27.

In the grand, gross and gleeful tradition of Screwballs, LOOSE SCREWS is the archetypal 80s pubescent romp. Director Rafal Zielinski serves a heady mlange of laughs and licentiousness as we follow the horny high jinks of four young men banished to Cockswell Academy, a summer school created for teenagerdom's worst repeat offenders. To pass the time, the boys begin to play a game where points are scored by scoring with Cockswell's smorgasbord of comely teenage vixens. The ultimate prize - Ms. Mona Lott, Cockswell's pneumatic new French instructor. The only force standing in their way is the diabolical Principal Arsenault, who has designs of his own upon the preternaturally enervating Ms. Lott.

Severin CEO Carl Daft is particularly proud of Severin's restoration of LOOSE SCREWS, calling it "the best looking film we've ever released. Every frame of this uproarious film -- along with its cornucopia of feminine unmentionables -- has been restored in all its lusty, lustrous, lascivious glory thanks to Severin's unearthing of a long-thought-lost 35mm negative from deep within an abandoned vault beneath Interstate 5."

Severin has angered its DVD author once again by pushing the LOOSE SCREWS disc to new heights of storage capacity with an overabundance of extras. A rip-roaring commentary with director/80s teen sex maestro Rafal Zielinski is perfectly complemented by interviews with producer Ken Gord and legendary Canuxploitationer Maurice Smith. And as a digestive for the legions of SCREWS completists, Severin is also including the ultra-rare international version of LOOSE SCREWS in its entirety. The international cut -- containing 10 minutes of extra footage -- was sourced from the last known VHS European copy of LOOSE SCREWS in existence. It is presented in authentic VHS-Vision!

All in all, LOOSE SCREWS stands as a pitch perfect time capsule of its halcyon age. As opposed to Screwballs (a period piece), LOOSE SCREWS captures the crimped looks and incandescent sounds of 1985 with unabashed gusto. Soon-to-be household name Demi Moore even gets into the act, co-writing one of LOOSE SCREWS' more unforgettable songs, the finger-snapping "Changing" (co-written with first husband Freddy Moore of the Nu Kats.)

"If my comprehensive knowledge of film history tells me one thing, it's that it is beyond Sisyphean to duplicate a runaway success" says Severin CEO Carl Daft. "Too many sequels to count have been found mowed down on celluloids Omaha Beach, never to be heard from again. That's why we at Severin count ourselves extraordinarily fortunate to possess the rights to one of cinema's few sequels that actually outdo its forbear. It's undeniable; LOOSE SCREWS delivers the goods, runs back to the store, refills all available cubic space, drives to your home once more, and surprises you with a glorious dessert."

Academy presents HARRYHAUSEN double feature

Beverly Hills, CA The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present two classic films highlighting the work of stop-motion animation and visual effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen, 20 Million Miles to Earth and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, on Friday, July 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The screening is presented in conjunction with the Academys current exhibition The Fantastical Worlds of Ray Harryhausen, and there will be special gallery hours from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and after the screening.

Directed by Nathan Juran and produced by Charles H. Schneer, 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) was Harryhausens final black-and-white film. It features one of his favorite monsters, the Ymir, who survives the crash of a spaceship returning from the first human exploration of Venus, and ultimately wreaks havoc on the city of Rome.

In The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), the famed sailor and his fiance Princess Parisa land on an island in search of provisions while on their way to Baghdad to be married. On the island, they encounter an evil magician, a genie and many Harryhausen creations, including a man-eating Cyclops. Also directed by Juran and produced by Schneer, this action-packed adventure was Harryhausens first Dynamation film in color and is considered one of his best.

The Fantastical Worlds of Ray Harryhausen is open to the public through August 22 in the Academys Fourth Floor Gallery in Beverly Hills. Regular viewing hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends, noon to 6 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free.
